Engineering is one of the most popular disciplines in colleges and universities because an engineer enjoys prestige and respect in society at large. The decision to choose this discipline should not be considered lightly by the students since they spend almost 4 to 5 years pursuing this degree.
In Pakistan, engineering is a go-to the profession for students. Choosing a career in engineering requires an understanding of what’s ahead. Top engineering universities of Pakistan are:

·      The Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). PIEADS was founded in 1967 but only as a rector school. The Institute started its educational activities in 1976 with the affiliation of Quaid-e-Azam University and became a Centre for Nuclear Studies (CNS). In 1997 the Institute gained its new name and become a separate entity, and in 2000 PIEAS was granted the status of a degree awarding institute. PIEAS is located in Islamabad and is recognized as a top-tier university, which is devoted towards providing higher education in specific fields of engineering, natural sciences, and formal sciences. PIEAS has a highly qualified faculty and state-of-the-art infrastructure.
·         The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST). NUST was established in March 1991 as a public university with its main campus in Islamabad. It came into being by merging military and civil educational resources. The main aim of establishing the university was the promotion of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects and it gradually expanded by establishing a broader set of courses consisting of economics, finance, management, and social sciences degrees. NUST is ranked by QS World Ranking as among the top 50 universities under the age of 5 0 and also among the top 500 universities in the world. It is ranked by the QS among the top 300 universities in the world related to the field of Electrical Engineering. Whereas, Times Higher Education ranks NUST amongst the top 100 universities for BRICS and emerging economies. In the field of Electrical, Engineering NUST is among the top 120 in Asia and among the top 250 in the world. It was also ranked as among the next top 50 universities globally by Times in 2016. NUST is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, United Nations Academic Impact and Talloires Network.
·             The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (GIKI). GIKI was founded in 1993 by the former President of Pakistan Ghulam Ishaq Khan. It is a private sector research university located in Topi, Swabi, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. GIKI is considered one of the most prestigious and esteemed engineering institutes of Pakistan. It is also amongst the top engineering institutions of Pakistan ranked by HEC. GIKI has outstanding faculty who put emphasis on research in science and engineering subjects.
·         The Institute of Space Technology (IST). IST was established in 2002, as Public Sector University in Islamabad. The focus of studies at IST is on astronomy, aerospace engineering and astronautics. IST was established under the auspices and the support of the Pakistan National Space Agency. IST offers a wide range of undergraduate and post-graduate programs in partnership with Beihang University and the University of Surrey.
·         The Air University (AU) came into being in 2002. It’s a public sector university that is located in Islamabad, Pakistan. It was established by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and is under the management of PAF’s education command. Air University offers undergraduate and post-graduate programs in the field of engineering, business management, and humanities. It is ranked among the top in engineering and technology category, by HEC. It is also a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK and International Association of Universities.
·         The National Textile University (NTU) is a federally administered institution established in 1959 at the outskirts of the Faisalabad. NTU was the first ever institution of textile education in Pakistan. The university offers graduate, masters and Ph.D. degrees in Textile Engineering, Computer Sciences, Software Engineering, Social Sciences, Fashion, visual arts, humanities, information technology, and other textile-related disciplines. From the start, the National Textile University has been a leading institute of textile education in the county while meeting the technical and managerial human resource needs of almost the entire textile industry of Pakistan.
·    The University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore is a public sector university. UET is considered one of the most prestigious universities in Pakistan. The University offers degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. UET was founded as Maclagan Engineering College named after Edward Douglas MacLagan in 1921. By 1932 it became an affiliated college of Punjab University and began offering undergraduate degrees in engineering subjects. By 1962, the university was granted a charter and was renamed as the West Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. The university was renamed as the University of Engineering and Technology (UET). Due to the exceptional increase in students’ enrolment, in 1970 a plan was devised to establish additional campuses. Therefore, in the 1975 University of Taxila was established. And, in 1980 the University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar campus was set-up.

·         The Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) is a public research university, which is located in Jamshoro Sindh. The university’s main focus is on the teaching of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In 1963 it was established as Sindh University Engineering College, affiliated with Sindh University at Jamshoro, and in 1973 a charter of “engineering University” was granted under the title of Mehran University of Engineering and Technology. In July 1976, it was established as a campus of the University of Sindh and a year later as a chartered an independent university. In 2016, HEC ranked it 6th in engineering category of higher educational institutions and 5th in higher education institutions.
