University Orientation - Dos and Don'ts

Orientation is one of the most exciting timings of the university year. It means you get to experience lots of fun and excitement at University. Orientations connect students with the university community and provide them with a sense of belonging.
If you have or haven’t gone to orientation yet, here are important dos and don’ts to follow:
  1. Dos

  • Be Neutral:

At orientation, there is a high chance that you will meet new people and make friends with them. You will be creating an impression, so it is important that you interact with people open-mindedly as it is the best way to make great friends.
  • Be Yourself:

Be sure to make friends with those who share your likes and dislikes, otherwise, you might end up with some friends that you might not necessarily get along with all the time. So be yourself and you will attract the right people.
Do your Research: For the most part of the orientation, you have to check your schedule and pick your classes. You don’t want to end up with teachers who can’t teach or whose style of teaching isn’t good for you. Meet old students and ask them which teachers are good.  They will provide you with insight on how to be a good student. Look up at the university notice boards and talk to the faculty on what goes on at the orientation because you don’t want to come unprepared.

      2Don'ts

  • Over Pack

If you are planning to stay in the hostels, then do not do over packing for one or two nights. Bring your basic essentials only and leave the decorative items at home. You don’t have to do everything for one night.
  • Exclude Isolation:

Do not block yourself from others and if you walk in isolation, people will think of you as unapproachable for all the wrong reasons, before you even begin. Be flexible and open-minded and don’t make first impressions instantly. This may take time as you will be making friends with people from all kinds of background and it will be a great learning experience.
  • Pay Attention to Rumors:

Do not pay attention to any social media rumor. Keep in mind that it is your first day and you haven’t met this person yet, so you don’t know their side of the story. If you hear any rumor at the campus, just encourage those spreading it to stop because it might prove devastating for ‘someone.’
  • Be Judgmental:

Coming to University means that you most likely want to excel further into a person that represents great excellence and discourage stereotypes. So if you meet someone from a far-flung area who doesn’t speak the same slang as you, do not automatically resume him/her as ghetto because they made it to the university like you and it is a new start for everyone.
  • Make Financial Contract Without Telling Your Parents First:

Do not make any financial agreements with management without the consent of your parents. Discuss with your parents first, you might not know if they have the financial backup saved. Talk to your financial advisor while you are at university.

It is important to keep in mind that university is a fresh start for all, so give every person a chance like you’d want them to give you.
